Your Winter Park Ski Season Checklist: What to Do Before, During, and After the Slopes

Ski Season Checklist

The leaves have turned, the mountains are watching the forecast, and everyone in Winter Park is starting to think about snow. If you’re planning a trip this season, here’s how we’d do it. We live here, so this comes straight from experience.

Before you arrive

Book lodging early. Winter Park fills up around holidays and powder weekends. If you’re traveling with a group or a dog, book sooner so you get the room that fits everyone.

Sort your gear. Renting is often easier than flying or driving with skis. Black Tie Ski Rentals can help you skip the rental-shop scramble.

Check conditions and opening dates. Opening day, lift status, and terrain all change through the season, so check Winter Park Resort’s official site before you go.

On the mountain

Start with the easy wins. If your group has mixed abilities, the resort’s blue runs are a great way to warm up. Our earlier post on favorite blue runs is a good place to begin.

Try Mary Jane. It’s the local favorite for a reason. If you want to ski the way people here do, read our guide to Mary Jane before you go.

Pace yourself at altitude. Drink more water than you think you need, take breaks, and go easy on day one.

After the lifts close

Soak. Our hot tub and view deck, which we call “Chillax at 103,” is made for tired legs.

Grab a drink somewhere quiet. The Den + Hideaway is Winter Park’s only private bar and lounge. It’s the best place to compare notes on the day.

Take the dog out. If your pet came along, we have five pet-friendly rooms. Ask us for our favorite easy walks nearby, or start with two local favorites. The Fraser River Trail is a multi-use path that welcomes leashed dogs, and it’s a good spot to walk, snowshoe, or Nordic ski with your pup. Twin Bridges Trail is a short, scenic connector that crosses two bridges near Vasquez Creek, with views of James Peak and Corona Pass. Keep dogs leashed, and check posted signs and current conditions before you head out.

Stay with people who know the area

We’re a locally owned boutique hotel, and our team is happy to help with dinner reservations, lesson ideas, and the best way to spend a non-ski day. Ready to plan your trip? Book your stay or call us at 970-281-5998.
